A little bit of history...

Reflexology was practiced way back in ancient civilisations all over the globe, the first evidence of this holistic therapy was found in the tomb of an Egyptian physician named Ankhmahor, dated 2330BC. The tomb revealed beautiful hand painted hieroglyphs depicting Reflexology treatments on the hands and feet.

In the 1900’s Dr William Fitzgerald an ear nose and throat surgeon developed Reflexology with his research into Zone Therapy, this was later refined by Dr Joe Shelby; he detailed the first diagrams of reflexes on the feet and hands. Dr Joe Shelby’s assistant, Eunice Ingham a physiotherapist continued to develop the mapping of reflex points whilst carrying out many client studies, it was Eunice Ingham that took reflexology as we know it today out to the general public and to the shores of England with the help of Doreen Bailey in the 1970’s.

So, history tells us is that reflexology started within the medical profession, but with lack of funding for scientific research through the years it became deemed as a complementary therapy; luckily today with the support of professional associations and modern contributors Reflexology is continually developing and research is on the increase. The papers that have been published specifically looking at the effectiveness of Reflexology are available to view on the research page.
